What is World Cancer Day?
World Cancer Day was born on the 4 February 2000 at the World Summit Against Cancer for the New Millennium in Paris. The Paris Charter aims to promote research, prevent cancer, improve patient services, raise awareness and mobilise the global community to make progress against cancer and includes the adoption of World Cancer Day. What does the Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund mean to us?
Our Director Claudia Talsma has first-hand experience of losing a loved one to cancer. In 2006 sadly she lost her father to Pancreatic Cancer, after a short sickbed of 6 weeks. During his illness, he suffered from extremely dry and sensitive skin whilst undergoing his chemotherapy treatment. In most cases, Pancreatic Cancer is often terminal when first diagnosed.
During his treatment, he experienced side-effects from chemotherapy such as ingestion, pain, fatigue and extremely sensitive dry skin and at times rashes and sores. In most cases, hospitals provide skincare that might – to some – feel greasy and unpleasant to use. They are often paraffin or petroleum-based creams. Using such creams can feel unpleasant, especially when your senses are already hypersensitised and are being prodded and poked during chemo.
Claudia’s father was no exception to this. Salcura’s Bioskin Dermaspray was the only product his senses could tolerate during his sickbed. It is packed with minerals, vitamins and free from the smell of chemicals or medicinal ingredients which helped Claudia’s father cope with his nausea. Unfortunately, Claudia’s father lost his battle. Since his passing Claudia has experienced so many others reach out to Salcura for help with their skin whilst they are fighting for their lives. With the launch of our new website this February 2020, we will start donating 1% of all sales to the Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund. Our original idea was to donate a percentage of only our Dermaspray sales during the month of February, but we felt it just wasn't enough. That is why we now permanently raise funds for PCRF. Since her father passed, Claudia has tried to find ways of raising funds for this amazing organisation, particularly because the survival rate to pancreatic cancer has unfortunately barely gone up in the past 40 years. Unfortunately, in 40 years the survival rate has gone from 3% to 5-8%.
In memory of her father, Claudia started running 10k events across the world, at locations that held memories for her with her father. They used to run together when Claudia was a young girl. She has been to Florida, Verona (Italy) and the Netherlands to run in his memory and raise money but had to pause her efforts due to an old injury. Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund was founded in 2004. It is a charity dedicated to exclusively supporting research to improve the diagnosis and treatment of Pancreatic Cancer. All the research conducted by Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund is funded entirely by public donations. Nearly 9,500 people each year are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the UK. To date, fifty-nine projects have been funded, with a total value of £9.2 million. These are focused on early diagnosis of pancreatic cancer and the development and monitoring of more effective treatments.
